Fashion Environmental Impact

May 13, 2019 - By Urbamerican Apparel
The negative environmental impacts caused by the fashion industry are at all time high right now and URBAMERICAN needs YOUR help!

Although we work hard to maintain an eco-friendly apparel brand, the fight can’t stop there. If we plan to do our planet some good, we need to inform our customers about how to reduce their environmental impact as consumers too.

Ready to learn? Let’s get this party F*CKING started!

#1 - Buy Less

We are buying clothing now more than ever. For every 10 garments we purchase, our grandparents only bought 2. ONLY 2!! This excessive consumerism is due to fast-changing trends in the fashion industry, as well as mass production of cheap, disposable clothing.

Unfortunately, clothing simply just doesn’t last as it used to...

At URBAMERICAN, we strive to provide our customers with quality clothes that last. With our apparel, there is no need to continuously purchase new clothing due to cheaply made garments. Our 100% cotton tees are made to withstand whatever the HELL you put it through and our eco-friendly inks are sure to last without fading.

When you shop URBAMERICAN, you are investing in clothing that will last - helping you buy less & save the planet.

#2 - Buy Clothes from Sustainable Brands

Firstly, what are Sustainable Clothing Brands? In short, these are companies that make their clothing using natural energy and avoid pollution.

Although this way of fashion may not solve all our environmental problems throughout the industry, choosing a brand that limits its amount of pollution, waste, and uses eco-friendly materials is a great start. Many brands who follow this movement tend to label their clothing as sustainable fashion or ethically made fashion.

URBAMERICAN is DAMN proud to be one of these brands!

This philosophy of environmental and social sustainability in the fashion industry is essential to protect our planet from further damages. The difference between URBAMERICAN and other sustainable clothing brands is that we offer apparel to more than just the folks who are environmentally conscious.

Why?

Because we understand that not every consumer shares the same mission as we do.

This is why we design & create clothing that we know our customers will enjoy while also doing our part, as a company, to not add further harm to our planet. That’s just what we do best!

#3 - Buy Better Quality

Have you ever bought a piece of clothing and after a single wash it’s never the same again?

That’s due to this new era of fashion which prioritizes keeping up with the changing trends rather than producing quality clothing.

At URBAMERICAN, we do everything in our power to make clothing that is not only appealing to our customers but also lasts. Our apparel is made all in-house, using only sustainable materials that won’t wear out after only a few washes.

Our 100% cotton tees will last through whatever HELL you put it through and the inks we use are environmentally friendly, lasting up to 90 washing without fading. After all, we are here to make clothing that is made to be lived in.

Quality clothes at affordable prices seem pretty hard to find these days…

We are here to change that!

#4 - Think Twice Before Throwing Out Old Clothes

We know that even the best quality clothing can’t last forever, but getting rid of our old clothes doesn’t have to be a wasteful process. When you are thinking of throwing away your worn-out digs, think about these options instead:

✓ Try to repair them. Sometimes we just need a little imagination and a sewing needle to fix a garment that we thought was ruined. A major reason people get rid of their clothes rather than fixing them is that 60% of people don’t know how to sew.. 60%!! So let’s learn to sew and save the planet people!

✓
Donate your clothes. Ever heard the saying one man’s trash is another man’s treasure? It definitely applies here! Giving away your clothes to friends and family or donating your clothes to charity will help eliminate waste. After all, the most eco-friendly clothes you can buy are the ones already in your closets.

✓
Put them in textile recycling bins. On average, Americans donate or recycle only 12 pounds of clothing each year. This amount is only 15% of the total apparel, footwear, etc. that could be recycled EVERY YEAR. That other 85% is what ends up as unnecessary waste. Recycling our old textiles can help make new clothing that doesn’t hurt our planet. RECYCLE RECYCLE RECYCLE!!

#5 - Keep an Eye on Your Washing

Even something as simple as washing your clothes has a significant environmental impact.

A typical household will do about 400 loads of laundry per year, consuming about 60,000 liters of water PER HOUSEHOLD.

That’s a F*CKLOAD of water that we use, pollute, and send back into our oceans. Being more mindful of over-washing can help make all the difference. Here are some tips to help you reduce your impact:

✓ Use an efficient washing machine - save money and water by upgrading your washing machine.

✓
Wash full loads - Reducing the number of loads you do saves water. We recommend loading your washing machine ¾ full for the most efficiency.

✓
Use green detergent - Many conventional detergents contain chemicals that are harmful to your clothing and our aquatic ecosystems.

✓
Use cold water - 90% of the energy used during washing is to simply heat the water. Try washing cold. Save the planet and save on your energy bill.

✓
Don’t use tumble dryers - Tumble dryers use TONS of energy and shorten the lifespan of your clothes. Hang drying will save you money and keep your clothes lasting longer.

Stop the madness, stop the excess washing and start saving the planet!
